Darbyshire is looking for an experienced art handler and installer to join their London based team in a full time position

Required Skills and Attributes

Candidates will have proven experience in handling and installing artworks in both gallery and home. They will be organised with good people skills. A keen eye for detail, and willing to work with a core team of experienced picture framers and art handlers, while equally capable of working on their own initiative. Ability to work well under pressure and problem solve is essential for this position and a knowledge of practical framing would be preferable.

The successful candidate will require a clean driving license.

Darbyshire Ltd., a contemporary art picture framer, is looking for practical minded people to join their team in their Gloucestershire workshops, based near Stroud. Duties will involve all aspects of handling and mounting artists prints and drawings, in addition to preparation and fitting of the artworks into frames at a very high standard for some of the most prestigious galleries in the UK and abroad.

Required Skills and Attributes

The ideal candidates will be practical and patient, with a keen eye for detail, willing to work with a core team of experienced picture framers, while equally capable of working on their own initiative. Ability to work well under deadlines is essential in these positions.

Knowledge of the industry is an advantage but not essential.

Full time or part time by agreement.

Darbyshire was recently commissioned by Other Criteria to come up with a creative solution for their display of limited edition books at the New Bond Street shop. Mark Darbyshire collaborated with Other Criteria’s director Hugh Allan to design custom pine wood ‘table’ stands fitted with plywood tops and plexi covers.

Darbyshire is pleased to announce the expansion of our main London workshop, to include the first floor at 19-23 White Lion Street in Islington. Clients and visitors can now enjoy meeting with our advisors to talk over framing projects in the new dedicated consultation area we have created. This new space also affords Mark Darbyshire the opportunity to show the work of those artists that he has collected over the years.

To celebrate the opening Mark has invited artist Guy Gormley to present some of his recent photographic work for our reception in the new space. Please join us for drinks on Nov 2nd.

Gormley’s new works include domestic inkjet prints, prints from digital pictures transferred to celluloid, as well as prints made in the darkroom from traditional 35mm negatives. He controls the atmosphere of his subjects through the knowing manipulation of photographic process, from editing and cropping, to paper types and methods of framing, each step in the image-making is undone and tested.

In certain images characters are implied. In others scenes are set. Close-ups of the body or vegetation allude to something hidden and private, and the sequencing of the pictures suggests narratives, making the photographs temporal, as if they are stills from moving images.

A publication showcasing related work to 'Inside Polytunnel' will be launched at the Son Gallery on November 23rd, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.

Darbyshire has proudly framed and made display cases for Jake and Dinos Chapman since they graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1990. Framing the art on view in their current show at White Cube was a large project successfully handled by our highly skilled employees.

Over the past year, artists Jake and Dinos Chapman worked separately on the artworks in their recent show at White Cube, and only became aware of each other’s pieces during the installation. Over the past twenty years, the brothers have shared a critical dialogue that has questioned the process of making art together. The Secret Garden Party is the UKs most radically independent and inspiring Arts and Music festival. This year we have teamed up with the SGP to create a unique competition, readers are invited to apply for this funding by submitting a proposal by 2ND MAY.

You will be installing your work inside a live arts event with thousands of viewers. Your work will be competing with live bands, interactive theatre and wild celebrations. Therefore you need to consider colour, size, illumination and it's interactive capacity.

There are no height, width or length restrictions. Your work can be placed in a unique area such as within trees, stages, fields, ponds, lakes...

The theme for SGP 2011 is Origins and Frontiers and your work should reference this theme.

Please submit a proposal containing a physical description, contextual reference, project footprint, break down of costs and contact details.

London's Darbyshire and BRICKHOUSE gallery were pleased to present Incarnation 5: Stroud, throughout the month of June as part SVA's Site Festival 2011. Curator Guy Gormley invited several artists to install shows and perform their interdisciplinary work in various vacant spaces located in Stroud. The opening evening of Incarnation 5, Friday 3 June, was launched with performances by artists Michael O'Mahony, Edwin Burdis and Henny Moan in the Goods Shed, these performances will were followed by an immersive happening created by L-v-L and TOP NICE, featuring a live performance by the band Hounds of Hate. The evening also featured the opening of Loading Spaces, an exhibition by four young London-based artists in Stroud's Merrywalks space.

Edwin Burdis

Edwin has been making and performing under various guises since the late 1990s. He has made pop music with Turner Prize winning artist Mark Leckeyas DonAteller, in the band Jack Too Jack and as part of Man Like Me. Edwin's current output is most often drawing and non music based performance, he recently performed at Tate Moderns No Soul For Sale. The subject of these spontaneous and often humorous works is loosely the artist himself but more specifically food, sex, greed, the future and being a man. Through May and June, Edwin will be in residency at the Hayward Gallery in London. This period of intense productivity will feed his performance at Incarnation 5.

Michael O'Mahoney

Michael O'Mahony

Recently shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize, artist Michael O'Mahony's work is personal and funny, often exploring his experiences of living with his parents in Palmers Green, London, in the house he grew up in. In a sense, all of Michael's work is about himself, drawing himself in different scenarios or adopting characters to act out. Michael's aesthetic influence comes largely from popular culture and his explorations of the disparate but widely available internet 'content', from Youtube and similar blogs or sites. Through his personal study Michael gives us a unique and human insight into his life, and also our own and how we live now. BRICKHOUSE commissioned a new performance for Incarnation 5 that saw him expand on his mantra-like lectures.

Loading Spaces

A collaborative project has brought together the work of Nigel Dunkley, Roman Liska and the Lloyd Coorporation which opened on June 3rd, and will be on view through 30 June. Occupying a shop located in Stroud's Merrywalks centre and the SVA shop front, the group has produce an exhibition specifically engaged with retail spaces, as well as the wider network of produced and circulated objects in the locale. The exhibition will undergo a series of modulations, metamorphoses and potentially radical shifts over the course of its duration

LVL Kowloon Walled City cocktail bar held in SVA's courtyard

Working with image and sound, L-v-L (Hampus Larsson, Thomas Bush, Tobias Brick Centerwall) will use the SVA building to open 'Landing Strip 2'. The original 'Landing Strip' was a bar open only on 30 October 2010, and the sequel will be similarly fleeting. The environment of the bar draws on research into the Kowloon Walled City, Hong Kong - a pocket of land which remained under Chinese control during the British occupation. For many years it was the most densely populated inhabitation on Earth.

Hounds of Hate

Hounds of Hate make experimental, slurred synthesizer music with references to pitched down boogie and acid as well as Snoop Dogg / Nate Doggterritory hip hop. Hounds perform live with a battered looking but beautiful sounding selection of hard-found equipment. They are a three piece fronted by Canadian Stan Iordanov, they live and work in London.

TOP NICE

Top Nice

A club night happening regularly in London and Stockholm and a record label with a release from Michael O'Mahony scheduled for later this year. Originating in Stockholm in 2006 Top Nice started in London in 2008 and has grown into a forum for new and old dance music of all kinds. Recent events have seen Lil Silva playing UK Funky, Brains playing Ghetto House and Soca at 170 bpm and Michael O'Mahony giving us self-improvement motivational speeches.

BRICKHOUSE

BRICKHOUSE produces short-living programmes of exhibitions with the aim of giving artists a space to produce fast and spontaneous solo shows. It has had 4 previous incarnations starting with a 13 show run in the basement of a house in Bloomsbury. Incarnation 2 was a one-night show atLimoncello Gallery, 3 was hosted by Edel Assanti and 4 was at the New Gallery, Peckham, which consisted of 7 one-week shows. Brickhouse is conceived by artist and curator Guy Gormley and run by Guy Gormley and designer Thomas Bush.

Darbyshire has sponsored annually curated group exhibitions hosted by SVA since 2007. Proprietor Mark Darbyshire has worked closely with the London art world over the last twenty years in his capacity as picture framer and art fabricator. He came to framing through art. Beginning in astudiocomplex set up in east London he shared with a group of fellow artists after leaving Goldsmiths' college in the late 1980's. This group was part of a larger movement that became known as YBA's. At the time Mark was making art and framing his own work along with friends and soon found himself with requests for framing. New galleries were setting up in London and there were many artist led exhibitions in disused buildings across the city. His further involvement with the YBA movement of the early 1990's in London and then onwards has lead to a keen interest in artists' ideas and practice. His job brings him into contact with art and artists daily and the Darbyshire business has managed to build up a collection over the years.Brickhouse Incarnation 5 will be an opportunity for Mark to develop his interests further with the presentation of challenging artwork in his home town of Stroud.

Site Festival

Site Festival is a contemporary arts festival, which aims to showcase artist-led projects with a full and exciting programme of visual arts, performance, music, screenings, open studios, artist talks and workshops. The Site Festival, now in its 15th year, presents the work of over 460 artists in 78 sites across the Stroud Valleys during the whole month of June. Stroud Valleys Artist Space is an artist led project for the promotion of contemporary arts which serves artists through a support and information network, studio space and project space facilities. SVA's mission is to raise the profile of artists and their role in the community by supporting the production and presentation of their work, thereby increasing opportunities for access to and active participation in the arts for a diverse range of people. Mark Darbyshire Lectures at NSCAD University, Canada

Mark Darbyshire was recently invited to deliver a lecture to students at

NSCAD University on his twenty-year career as a master frame maker and art

fabricator. Darbyshire spoke on the origins of fresh creativity instilled

from the early stages of his childhood, and then elaborated on his

educational background in engineering which transitioned into fine art

studies at Goldsmiths University. He explained how all these elements came

together, uniquely positioning his expertise in highly customized, difficult

frame projects, and gave him a natural ability to collaborate and

conceptualize with artists on the fabrication and installation of their work

for exhibitions and for private art collectors across the UK and

internationally.
